Suffrages |
Note: the Primer of 1599 does not include a section of suffrages comparable to that of a Book of Hours. I have therefore adapted the suffrages from a French Book of Hours in the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection in the Library of Congress (ms. 10). This hours has been published on CD-ROM by Octavo as Horae Beatae Mariae ad usum Romanum. The Rosenwald hours dates to 1524, and so is fairly close in date to the Primer on which the rest of this Hypertext Book of Hours is based. Like the Primer of 1599, it also follows the Use of Rome. The Latin text that follows is based on my own reading of the text of the Rosenwald hours, but has been modified in order to match it more closely to the texts in the rest of the Hypertext Book of Hours. Abbreviations have been expanded, errors and lacunae have been corrected, and spelling and vocabulary have sometimes been modified. The English translation is based on that of the Octavo edition, but it too has been extensively corrected and modified. Anyone wishing to know precisely what the Rosenwald hours contains should consult the Octavo CD-ROM. |

Sequuntur suffragia plurimorum sanctorum: Et primo de sanctissima trinitate. | Here follow suffrages of numerous saints. And first of the Most Holy Trinity. |
Aufer a me misericors Deus omnia mea mala praeterita, praesentia, et futura, interveniente beata Dei genitrice Maria semper que virgine, cum omnibus sanctis. |
Devout prayer to the Most Holy Trinity. I worship thee, God the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost: one God, equal in glory, coeternal in sovereignty. Thou art the true God: and no other is before thee. Thou art to be adored: to be revered, to be dreaded, and to be venerated in trinity and unity. Thou art ruler of all peoples and saviour of men. O God, be gracious to me, a sinner, because I, a sinner, do not deserve to raise my eyes to heaven, nor to gaze at thee, O omnipotent God, on account of the multitude of my sins. But thou art our compassionate maker and redeemer, who is coeternal and coterminous with the Father, who came to save sinners. Have pity upon me, a sinner, oppressed with the weight of all my iniquities. Remove from me, O merciful God, all my evils, past, present and future, by the intervention of the Blessed Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, with all the saints. Send aid to me from heaven so that my iniquity may not rule me: but that in respect to it, I may do penitence that is pleasing to thee, and in order to be able to reach thy mercy. O God, thou who alone has wisdom: thou knowest, my Lord, what things will free me, a sinner: according as it is pleasing to thee, and as it appears in the eyes of thy divine majesty: so let it be with me. Accept, O merciful Father, the prayers of thy servant and may my prayers reach thine ears, which I pour forth on behalf of me, a wretched sinner, in thy presence and in the presence of the Most Holy Virgin Mary and all the saints. |
O duo luminaria divinitus ante Deum lucentia: vestris radiis scelerum meorum effugate nubila. Vos enim estis illi duo in quibus Deus pater per filium suum specialiter edificavit sibi domum. Et in quibus ipse filius Dei ob sincerissimae virginitatis meritum dilectionis suae confirmavit privilegium in cruce pendens uni vestrum ita dicens. Mulier ecce filius tuus. Deinde ad alium. Ecce mater tua. Amen. | Prayer to the Blessed Virgin and to Saint John the Evangelist. O untouchable, and forever blessed, singular and incomparable virgin Mary, Mother of God, most pleasing temple of God, the sacred place of the Holy Ghost, the gate of the kingdom of heaven, by whom next unto God the whole world liveth. Incline, O Mother of Mercy, the ears of thy pity unto my unworthy supplications, and be unto me, a most wretched sinner, a pious helper in all things. O most blessed John, the familiar friend of Christ, which of our same Lord Jesus Christ was chosen a virgin, and among the rest more beloved, above all instructed in the heavenly mysteries, for thou wast made a most worthy apostle and evangelist: thee also I call upon with Mary, mother of our same Saviour, that thou wouldst vouchsafe to afford me thine aid with hers. O ye two celestial jewels, Mary and John. O ye two lights divinely shining before God. Chase away by your bright beams the clouds of my offenses. For ye are those two in whom God the Father through his own Son specially built a house for himself, and in whom God's Son himself because of the merit of most sincere virginity, hanging upon the cross confirmed the privilege of his love, saying thus to the one of you: woman, behold thy son: and then unto the other: behold thy mother. In the sweetness therefore of his most sacred love, through which at that time by our Lord's mouth, as mother and son ye were joined together, I, a most wretched sinner, recommend this day to you two both my body and soul that at all hours and moments, inwardly and outwardly, ye would vouchsafe to be firm guardians, and before God devout intercessors: for I believe firmly and say without any doubt that he who wants to be yours wishes to belong to God, and he who does not want to be yours does not want to belong to God. Whatever ye ask from him ye obtain without delay. Therefore, by this so very influential power of your worthiness, petition I beseech on behalf of me, a sinner, for the deliverance of my body and soul. Procure, I beseech, by your sacred prayers, that the nourishing spirit, the best giver of graces, may vouchsafe to visit my heart and dwell therein, which may thoroughly purge me from all filth of vice, lighten and adorn me with sacred virtues: cause me perfectly to stand, and persevere in the love of God and my neighbor, and after the course of this life the most benign Comforter, greatest bestower of graces, may bring me to the joys of his elect, who with God the coeternal and consubstantial Father liveth and reigneth world without end. Amen. |
Mea culpa: mea culpa: mea gravissima culpa. Amen. |
Likewise another prayer to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. O untouchable, and forever blessed, singular and incomparable virgin Mary, Mother of God, most pleasing temple of God, the sacred place of the Holy Ghost, the gate of the kingdom of heaven, through whom next unto God the whole world liveth. For the only begotten Son of God, true and omnipotent God, did make of you his most sacred mother: taking in addition from you that most sacred flesh through which the world, which was lost, was saved, by whose own most precious blood the world itself was redeemed and sins remitted, forming it in thy most precious womb from thy most precious blood, and uniting it to his eternal and unchanging Godhead, from which all things good proceed, through which all things are made. Whom I adore. Who gives his own most sacred flesh with his own most precious blood every day to his faithful in the form of bread and wine as a viaticum toward the salutary and vital renewal of souls. He who will have worthily consumed this will have eternal life, but he who will have unworthily consumed it, consumes and drinks judgment just as many times I have done. Through my sin, my sin, my sin, my most grievous sin. But he who will not have consumed it will not have eternal life. And on that account we say to you that through you, after God, the whole world liveth. By this faith I plead with thee, O Mother of God and perpetual ever virgin Mary, incline thine ears of kindly piety to my unworthy prayers, and be to me, a most pitiful sinner, a helper holy and kindly in all things, soliciting on my behalf at the fount of godliness and mercy, the creator and redemptor our Lord Jesus Christ, thy true son and omnipotent God, from whom all good things proceed, through whom all things are made: who does not desire the death of a sinner but rather that he might be converted and might live; for whom it is more characteristic always to pity and spare: make it that He through his ineffable mercy, by thy favors and prayers, absolve me from all sins, through which I have displeased him: bestowing upon me true humility, true mildness, grace and obedience, and an increase of faith, hope, and charity with perseverence, guarding me from falling back into sin and from the temptations of the devils of the world and of the flesh, so that I do not serve further the devils whom I have served in the multitudes of my wickednesses, namely, in pride, vainglory, covetousness, envy, wrath, gluttony, sloth, luxury, and the countless other sins of omission by which I have sinned and have caused others to sin. Through my sin, my sin, my most grievous sin. Because of these sins I have lost the kingdom of heaven and the company of angels and as often as I have offended against thy most godly son, so often have I also delighted the worst devils and deserved eternal torments; so often through my sin, my sin, my most grievous sin. Therefore I beseech thee, Mother of God and perpetual ever virgin Mary, that thou obtain for me indulgence and remission of all those and other sins, whatever I have done, from him thy Son from whom all good things proceed, by whom all things are made, who also illuminates every person who comes into this world: cause him to illuminate my mind with the light of his grace, inflaming it with the fire of his most gentle and most holy love; and cause me to worship him together with the Father and the Holy Ghost, the one and only true God, in spirit and truth, and above all things to love and fear him and firmly to obey and cleave to him, to keep his commandments, to shun sins, to imitate his holy suffering and patience, to abound with good works, to despise the riches of the world and to dread none of its adversities, and to do such a penance in this life for all my sins and wicked deeds as by thy prayers may be pleasing and acceptable to him, so that through the favor of his most sacred passion he might grant to me eternal life and peace with his saints and elect. Amen. |
Devota commendatio ad eandem.
Spes animae meae post Deum virgo Maria: in illam commendationem et in illam fidem qua te dilectus filius tuus dominus noster Iesus Christus praeelecto discipulo suo Ioanni commendavit: commendo tibi hodie et quotidie corpus et animam meam et honorem meum et horam exitus mei: et omnes actus meos. ac precor te ut serves me a peccatis: a scandalis: ab omni confusione humana: ab ira tremenda ab immundis cogitationibus: ab omni mortali peccato: a subitanea et improvisa morte ab omnibus periculis animae et corporis, honoris et rerum mearum: nec unquam me tale permittas facere peccatum quo gratiam tuam amittam. Da mihi in hac vita promptum adiutorium: esto mihi in tremendo iudicio prolocutrix apud filium tuum dominum nostrum Iesum Christum. Amen. |
Devout commendation to the same.
Hope of my soul after God, O Virgin Mary: toward that commitment and that faith with which thy beloved son our Lord Jesus Christ entrusted thee to his preferred disciple John: I commend to thee today and every day my body and soul and my honor and the hour of my going out, and all my deeds. And I pray thee that thou preserve me from sins, from causes of offense, from every human confusion, from frightening anger, from impure thoughts, from all mortal sin, from sudden and unforeseen death, from all dangers of soul and body, of reputation and of my affairs, and may thou not ever permit me to commit a sin such that through it I might lose thy grace. Grant to me emendation of past sins, protection for present sins, and prudence for future sins. Grant me in this life swift aid, speak in the terrible judgment on my behalf before thy son our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. |

Prayer: Protect, O Lord, thy servants with thine armies of peace: and make those who trust in the patronage of the Blessed Mary, ever virgin: secure against all enemies. Through Christ our Lord, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, O God, world without end. |

Prayer:
O God who after a marvelous order didst dispose the ministries of angels and of men: grant in thy mercy that our life may be defended on earth by them who stand forever before thee and minister unto thee in Heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, O God, world without end. Amen. |
Amen. | Prayer to one's own guardian angel. O my guardian, glorious angel who from among the heavenly hierarchy has been appointed by God as my guardian from the very moment of my birth from the womb: I beseech thee humbly and devotedly that thou thus illuminate, protect and defend me, entrusted to thee, driving far away the enemy who wishes me ill; not only restrain me from evil acts, but mayest thou also urge and induce me toward the good by thy virtue; and by the protection of thy actions mayest thou make me at last a dweller with thee and with those on high. Through Christ our Lord, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, O God, world without end. Amen. |
Amen. | Likewise another prayer to the same. I beseech thee, angelic spirit, to whom I by providence have been entrusted: that thou guard me unceasingly, that thou protect, watch attentively, and defend me from every attack of the devil while I am waking and sleeping, by night and by day; for hours and moments without interruption cherish me and watch over me, and accompany me everywhere I go. Avert from me through the strength of God every temptation of Satan, and that which my merits do not extinguish, by thy prayers hold fast before God, the most merciful judge, so that nothing of a contrary strength may have a place in me. And whenever thou seest me wandering through the steep places of vices, by going through the paths of justice trouble thyself to lead me back to my redeemer and creator. And in whatever need or distress thou beholdst me to be, may I feel the help of almighty God approach by means of thy covering over me. I pray thee, my guardian, that, if it can be done, thou makest my end known to me. And when I shall be drawn forth from this body at the command of God, do not allow evil spirits to frighten me or make sport of me, nor allow me to fall into the pit of desperation. And do not abandon me at all until thou hast led me to the sight of almighty God, my creator, in which sight may I, for work and grace and the clemency of God my Father, and thou, as my protection, together with Mary the most blessed mother of God and all the saints forever be joyful and rejoice together with Christ, world without end. Amen. |
